Dutch Colonization
Peter Minuit discovering the New York Colony. -www.wikipedia.org
In 1609, a Dutch vessel called the
Crescent
landed on a then undiscovered shore.
A man named Peter Minuit bought the island of Manhattan from the Natives.
He was fired in 1632 from the Dutch West India Company, but began founding Swedish colonies.
The Dutch colonized the area and by 1621, New Netherlands had been founded with its biggest city being New Amsterdam.
It consisted of parts of the colonies of New York, Delaware, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
The Dutch had conflicts with the Native Americans and the Swedes.

Then, King Charles II issued New Netherlands to his brother James, the Duke of York.
This incited a conflict between England and Holland, but England prevailed and the colony became New York.
Now, Dutch and English live together, though it is an English colony and an English majority.
There are also many Native American tribes such as the Mohawk, Oneida, and Seneca Indians here.
